Prometheus,
by Ridley Scott is about a group of scientists traveling together on
a spaceship named Prometheus headed towards an alien planet. They
interpreted a picture from several disconnected cultures in history
and on it was a map so they took it as an invitation to the planet.
They have been in a deep sleep to shorten the travel while an android
waits patiently for the time they wake up. The arrive to the
mysterious planet, and find alien establishments. What they find is
worse than they imagine, a dark liquid and mysterious slug-like
organisms that tear the scientists apart. They learn the alien race
they were seeking were now trying to destroy earth. In the end, there
is a lone survivor still seeking the answer she wishes to know,
escaping the alien being that created her who is now trying to
destroy her.
Cinematography
plays a huge role in this film as most of it is done in
computer-generated imagery. In order for this film to work, the
setting and prop dress have to match the genre of the film. Since
it's a genre film, the director needs to focus more on the visual
aspects to depict the alien world to the audience. He is effective in
making it convincing enough that these scientists are isolated and
the overall tone reflects on the decisions of colors and design of
the film to build suspense giving the feeling of hopelessness. The
director must have been meticulous about what is going to be shown
and how it would be presented. It seemed he took a lot time trying to
'get it right' for that specific look, and as most know, it is a
precursor but not directly related to, Alien,
a film Ridley Scott made earlier in his life. With that said, he had
a good balance of how to introduce the story and character
development with the imagery parallel to the progression of the plot.
The visuals are extremely stunning distracting away from how little he would
reveal until the end, allowing the audience to sympathize or
'favoritize' the characters in the story before he 'kills' them all.
